Star Wars Comm Tech Chip Reader & Comm Tech Chips
My World February 21st, 2008
The first Comm Tech Chip Reader was available in 1999 released with the Phantom Menace line of action figures. In order to listen to the Comm Tech Chips, one had to buy a Comm Tech Reader, install a 9 volt battery, turn on the Reader and slide the chip slowly across the face of it. You can hear several of the character’s lines from the movie.
Comm Tech Chip # 9 was sold with the Comm Tech Chip Reader as seen above. A typical collection starts wtih a few seen below…..
Phantom Menace
and the collection starts to grow and grow…..
There were oval Chips that were produced but not released to the general public due to a very high cost for producing them and a lack of interest. These are known as the 2nd generation Comm Tech Chips and several do exist in various styles and colors.
2nd Generation
Comm Tech Chip (Chewbacca)
Back of Chewbacca Oval Chip
Darth Maul Oval Chip
This technology is very impressive and is known as RFID (Radio Frequency Identification). The Reader has two pre-programmed sounds in it and can store the data of a total of four chips. In various parts of Europe it is known as the Comm Talk Reader.
One of the neat aspects of the Comm Tech Chips is the fact that they have a very small peg on them that allows the owner to use the Chip as a base for the action figure. There is also a small hole on the far right hand side which allows the owner to wear is on a chain around his or her neck similar to a military identification tag commonly known as a dog-tag.

The image below shows various Comm Tech Chips from the Green Carded Power of the Force and the Phantom Menace Episode 1 Carded Action Figures. Comm Tech Reader shown on the right and also the chain. Each Chip has a small hole where one can run the chain through it. A smart way to keep the collection all in one area.
Comm Tech Chips, Chain & Comm Tech Chip Reader
Lastly, it should be noted that there are some variations that were detected by collectors of Star Wars toys in regards to the back of the image in the center of the Chips. Some have a White backing such as the Darth Maul variation that exists.
