Sewing Duvet Covers
Garden guide February 18th, 2008
Switching your duvet cover changes the entire room - and the new home decorating fabrics available now make this all the more exciting. You can redecorate your bedroom in a weekend. Here are the basics to success in measuring and constructing your duvet cover.
Most duvets are too wide to conform to standard size fabric. The solution is to have one central panel, with side panels pieced on each side, to accommodate the width of the bed. To do this, cut 2 panels of fabric the length of duvet as needed. One of the panels is your center piece. Cut the second panel in half, and piece each half to the center. To join the panels, match the fabric design, if any, as closely as possible. Cut the backing fabric in 1 center and 2 side panels just as the top. The duvet cover is not permanently stitched closed, so that your duvet can be removed to be cleaned or to change the look of your room.
To make a duvet cover with a flap, add 16 inches to the total length measurement of the top fabric for the flap and and a 5/8″ seam allowance. Hem the duvet flap by turning and pressing under 1/2 inch, then turn under and press 1-1/2 inches and stitch.
Place your duvet cover and backing pieces right sides together and stitch together on three sides, with the flap extending 14 inches beyond the cover opening. Turn the cover right side out and press. Mark the buttonholes and button placement, make the button holes and sew on the buttons.
Make a duvet cover for each season or change with your mood. Enjoy!
