Putting Together a Petsafe Underground Fence System

We get a lot of questions concerning the different underground systems that Petsafe makes. What happens if we have different size dogs? Can we add different collars to the large dog system? This guide is meant to let pet owners know the different options that they have when putting together a system for their pets.

An Petsafe Underground System consists of the following components:

  • Transmitter

  • Flags

  • wire

  • Receiver or collar

Optional Components:

  • Lightning Module
  • Lawn Staples for above ground installation

The key component, the transmitter will work with any Petsafe Underground fence collar. Petsafe makes three different transmitters at this time. One for the standard, large dog, and deluxe ultralight systems, one for the Deluxe comfort fit System, and one for the Regular Comfort fit System. Petsafe has done its pet owners a real service in allowing each transmitter to work all collars. The RF-1010 is the standard transmitter for most of the systems and comes with a life time warranty. This transmitter will cover a system up to 25 acres. The two transmitters for the comfort fit systems will cover 25 acres for the deluxe system and 10 acres for the standard comfort fit system.

The receiver or collar is the other key component. Here is where the Pet owner has to know his or her pet. Petsafe offers five different collars. Below is a brief description of each.

Petsafe Collars:

  • The Standard Ultralight collar (model PUL-250BM)*- has one setting and is the basic collar which uses the Petsafe Battery Module. Pet should be at least 10 lbs.

  • The Large or Stubborn Dog collar (model PRF-275-19) has 5 settings and is by far the most common used collar. The pet should be at least 30 lbs for this collar. The first setting on this collar is a vibration signal only. This collar uses a 9 volt battery which can be purchased in your local dollar store. For the extra cost, it is a much better collar if your pet is over 30 lbs.

  • The Deluxe Ultra Light Collar (model PUL-275BM)* has five settings also and is a premium collar for dogs 10 lbs. and over. The first setting on this collar is tone only. It is a great collar for timid dogs. It uses the Petsafe Battery Module just like the standard Ultra Light.

  • The Standard Comfort fit Collar (model PIG00-10679) is one of the two newest Petsafe collars on the market. Its sleek design makes it a very comfortable fit for the dog. This collar is good for pets over 10 lbs. and has one setting just like the standard ultra light. This collar uses the Petsafe battery module.

  • The Deluxe Comfort fit Collar (model PIG00-10680) is the premium comfort fit collar that Petsafe released earlier this year. This collar is good for dogs 10 lbs and over. The collar has five settings with the first one being a tone only and uses the Petsafe battery module.

Both Comfort fit collars come with the quick fit buckle for a quick release or a quick hook up. The Ultra Light, the Stubborn and the Deluxe Ultralight all come with a nylon collar. The Petsafe battery modules last any where from six to eight months depending on useage.

Which do I choose?

The only extra considerations that we feel important for consumers to know is the following:

  • The nylon collar is replaceable on all three of the regular collars. Pet owners can actually purchase nylon collars and put the receivers on a new collar.
  • The comfort fit collar will make a perfect fit on your pet every time. The receiver is molded into the collar and quick fit buckle system makes it a premium collar. However, the collar can not be replaced like the nylon collar.

With all that information, the important aspect for the Pet owner to know is to evaluate your situation and choose the correct collar for your dog. If you have more than one dog, remember that your system will work with any of the Petsafe collars.
