The density of the visco elastic foam is usully talked about in terms of pounds per cubic foot, or more often, simply pounds. Visco elastic is the the technical term for Memory Foam. Density is one of the morst important things to consider when purchasing a memory foam mattress, that is what makes memory foam unique.

As a general rule, denser visco elastic foam is always better. Memory foam mattress overlays made with high density foams have a slower rebound (longer memory), are more durable, are more responsibe to body temperature and provide more support.

If you sleep mostly on your back or side, almost any memory foam mattress topper will work for you. Because the 3″ memory foam overlays do such a good job of conforming to your body you can get by with a purchase of a 2″. Very active sleepers should also consider a thinner memory foam overlay.

With that said you should not consider any foam with less than 3 pounds of desity. It just does not provide the support that is needed in order to ensure a good night sleep.

High density foams are warmer to sleep on since they hold more heat as they are denser and do not allow your body heat to escape. Keep that in mind when buying for a warm climate if you do not have air conditioning or fans to help aleviate this factor.
