Finding The Perfect Used Car
Cars & Trucks March 9th, 2008
If you are in the market for a used automobile, there are many factors and details to take into consideration before you start. Many people jump the gun, or wait until the last minute before they are 100% sure they will be happy with their new investment. The end result could be a car that spends more time being repaired then it spends on the road, a car that exceeds your budget, or one that you are just plain usatisfied with. Lets explore ways to avoid any of these potential problems so that you will be happy with your purchasing decision:
First, and most importantly, determine the actual purpose and amount of usage your prospective automobile is going to be. In my case, I needed a car that will not only haul me back and fourth from work 20 miles a day, but will also have enough cargo space to fit my bicycle into since I am an avid cyclist. I determined that I needed a vehicle that had lower than 100k miles, and a good track record for any maintance issues. Allthough a low mileage/low maintenance vehicle is desired by all, it was obviously necessary in my case due to the amount it will be driven.
It is also important to consider where you live. Not just because of high crime-rates, but also because of weather conditions, and road quality. If you’re like me and live in a city that lays salt on its roads to combat icy conditions in the winter, then to help narrow the selection of used cars down, consider where the vehicle is actually originally from. If I were to buy a used vehicle from my area, then there is a good chance that there will be rust/corrosion issues allready present. If the vehicle is from Florida, then it is likely to have minimal problems with rust (at least in the near foreseable future). Also, the roads in my city are notoriously bumpy. A vehicle with a good functioning suspension system is ideal.
Last, but certainly not least, you need to consider what kind of budget you have to work with. Who wants to be working 40 hours a week and barely have enough money to eat after they pay their car insurance and car payment! Be realistic when shopping around. Everyone has a car in mind that they WANT, and often times make the mistake of buying one they can’t AFFORD. I’d love to be driving around a Ferrari, but that is niether practical, nor is it affordable by my standards.
To sum everything up, do not get too carried away with what you want, but focus mre on what you need. It makes more sense to buy a minivan, or SUV if you are married with 3 kids, then to buy a 2-seater corvette. Sit down and review your earnings and your bills, to get an idea of how much money you have available in your budget. Do not be too picky on minor things such as color either. I have seen too many people pass up their ideal car because of color, and then settle for one of lesser quality. I know because I am a mechanic at a used car dealership, and have repaired said vehicles. Good luck finding that perfect car, and I hope that I have given you at least a little insight to aid in your buying process!!!!!
