Fake “antique” garden art and statues
My World April 4th, 2008
I know for a fact from personal experience that items advertised as “antique” “vintage” or “imported from European antique dealers” etc can be modern reproductions. I know that from fact since I have seen a sculpture advertised as an English antique which was a direct knock-off of one one MY pieces, and having the photos of both proves it.
This also applies to a cast iron “hotel salvage” item that turned out to be a modern reproduction, again, photos prove it.
I suggest that any potential bidder always read every line in any auction page that suggests the item in an antique, vintage or old, concrete statuary as well as metal; cast-iron, bronze, brass etc are EASY to re-cast new cheaply in Mexico or elsewhere, and with a few techniques involving acid patinas, water etc they can be made to look like they are antiques.
Also be aware that “live” auctions may or may not be the real deal, when you participate in a “live” auction on Ebay, expect to pay an additional fee of 17 to 24% on top of your bid as a “buyers premium” fee. You will also pay a second party usually to get the item, crate, pack and ship.
