This guide is to help quilting people with quick converstions regarding fat quarters.

One fat quarter is 18″ x 22″ or 1/4 of a yard of fabric. If you take 1 yard of fabric and fold it in half, you will get 1/2 yard. Now that 1/2 yard is folded in half. Cut that and you will have your fat quarter. A lot of people don’t understand what a fat quarter is. There are many, many quilt patterns coming out that feature fat quarters. They are not hard to work with and work up pretty quick.

Now to the fun part!!! I am going to give you the breakdown in square sizes when you have 1 fat quarter to work with.

2″ squares - you will get 99
2-1/2″ squares - you will get 50
3″ squares - you will get 42
3-1/2″ squares - you will get 30
4″ squares - you will get 20
4-1/2″ squares - you will 16
5″ squares - you will get 12
5-1/2″ squares - you will also get 12
6″ squares - you will get 9 and
6-1/2″ squares you will get 6

I hope this helps some of you quilters out there who are just starting out. These measurements are based on correct cutting.

Thank you for reading my guide.
