Many sellers of “raw” (coins that are not graded and slabbed) often state their coins are PCGS or NGC quality in order to pump up the sale value of the coin. Having been a numismatist for 35 years and having dealt with PCGS and NGC grading of coins, their purchase and sale on a regular basis and currently holding several of the top PCGS registered collections I can say without a doubt that if the coin for sale is good enough to be graded by PCGS or NGC then it would be. Having the coin graded and slabbed makes it worth significantly more than if it is not. Especially on high end, low production hard to get coins. Almost any honest seller would take the 3-4 weeks and spend the $30 to have the coin graded in order to obtain not only a higher selling price but also to provide a true and honest grading of the coin. Be very very careful of buying raw coins. You should always expect that the coin is most likely not gradable by PCGS or NGC especially if the seller is a coin store. Also keep in mind that not all grading services are the same. If you are purchasing coins for investment you should try to stick with PCGS and NGC.
