Coin Grading for New Coin Collectors
us coins March 31st, 2008
I am not a professional coin grader but I have been a collector for over 35 years. Many of my own personal opinions are as good and always better then NCG or PCGS because I am not spending their money it is my money on the line. I place little stock in the Big 4 coin graders that are presently monopolizing e-Bay and telling them how to run their coin auctions. With a little practice you can pick out the good coins from the bad. There are many sites on the internet that will tell you about the high points to look for in a good coin and a bad one. What is the difference between a bag mark and wear? Every coin collector has his economy in mine when he/she is buying coins. Price does not determine the value of a coin. Just because you bought it for $20.00 doesn’t mean you could sell if for $25.00 the next day or the next year for that matter. e-Bay is a great tool for collectors to reach a vast audience. It doesn’t mean that everyday your buyers will be shopping the week you have your coins up for sale, But it gives you an opportunity for exposure. I use coin grading companies from time to time. Since I have a very good idea of what the coin will grade out at, I choose the cheapest company that gives me the best service. They don’t always strengthen or even assure the value of the coin, it adds another opinion to my own. Graders have been known to change their grade on the same coin from time to time. This was said of NCG in a recent article in Coin World magazine. Really rare coins will always have several appraisals attached to them to protect the buyer. So as always I tell you to “Buy the Coin Not the Grader” But if your interested in a good cheap grading company drop me a line. Thank you chefyork aka Ray York
