Just a note to add to the fine guide written by another gentleman. Be sure to verify what the truss rod cover looks like on the China Les Pauls. An immediate fake will have a three screw truss rod cover, exactly like a cheaper Epiphone/Gibson version.

To the best of knowledge Les Pauls have always had a two screw cover. Be careful though. Recently I have seen the fakes with an identical two screw cover and they are getting harder to detect.

I myself was burnt by this scam and when complained to the seller was given a $100 Paypal refund. This brought my final purchase to about $150. Threathen with bad feedback and you may be as successful.

The fit and finish on my guitar was surprisingly good. Hardware was junk, but finish and neck construction were good. AGAIN , Nothing like a Les Paul or Epiphone. I was impressed with the higher degree of wood on mine versus on others that I have seen.

As mentioned, Sellers are getting shrewder and recommending you deal direct with them.

These guitars for $150 are not bad , BUT in no way compare to a Gibson Les Paul. Another sure fire detection is the fret board inlay work. Fancy Trapezoidal inlay is NOT a Les Paul feature that I am aware of. Also on the fakes the bottom portion of the body dips and slightly flairs up. It is not flat and level as a Les Paul.

I have seen this on other guitars such as Jay Tursers or Kelly’s.

Hopefully these additional tips will help you make a wiser, purchasing decision. I am in no way an expert , but have sense enough to know a fake or bad deal on EBAY.

The guitar that I purchased has been given a complete makeover and outfitted with new pickups and hardware. Luckily, I now have something that sounds 100% better than the original scam guitar.

Good Luck and Happy Ebaying!

Mike
