In Chinese medicine, headaches are typically due to some type of Liver disharmony. There are many different types of headaches in Chinese medical diagnosis and making a distinction between the multitudes of possible syndromes helps to have a successful treatment plan.

The most common Liver disharmony is Liver Qi Stagnation. The Liver is most happy when it has abundant Liver Blood flowing through it keeping it nourished and cool. The Liver is also pacified with the free and easy movement of Qi and Blood circulating throughout. Use our Free and Easy Wanderer Formula to relieve Liver Qi Stagnation.

If the Liver Blood becomes deficient, or if the Blood and Qi stagnate in the Liver, the Liver begins to heat up and become agitated. As this condition becomes chronic, the Liver can strike out at other organs, such as the Heart causing insomnia, or the Large Intestine causing digestive disorders such as IBS (Irritable Bowel Syndrome).

As in nature, heat in the body rises. In the case of Liver Heat, the Heat can rise through the meridians (or channels) and Liver heat often rises through the Gall Bladder channel. The Liver and Gall Bladder channels are connected and the Gall Bladder channel traverses the occipital area of the skull (the base of the skull) and the head itself ending at the temples. This is why Liver Heat Rising is one of the most common diagnostic patterns for headaches in Chinese medicine.

While immediate relief can be gained by anti-inflammatory medications and other pain killers, ultimately the root of the problem, Liver Qi Stagnation, must be addressed for long term relief. In Chinese medical theory, health is not simply the absence of pain and disease, health is the complete restoration of all of the organ systems and the free flow of Qi and Blood. This can be accomplished in many ways such as acupuncture/acupressure, nourishing Tonic herbs, a healthy lifestyle and Qi Gong exercises.

Healthy Eyes
The Liver opens into the eyes and whenever treating eye problems such as night blindness, blurred vision, cataracts, color blindness, redness, pain or itching of the eyes, the Liver must first be addressed.

Joint Heath
The Liver governs the sinews and the Liver Blood is responsible for nourishing tendons. Therefore, the Liver must be nourished to avoid stiffness in the joints and is central in the treatment of arthritis.

Hormonal Health
The Liver regulates menstruation and is responsible for the smooth flow of menstruation. Liver Qi Stagnation causes PMS, mood swings, irregular bleeding, cramps, and distention association with menstruation and peri-menopause. Along with the Kidney system, proper Liver function maintains hormonal balance and is always addressed in cases of fertility and reproduction.

Chinese Medicine relies on a complex diagnostic system that allows the acupuncture practitioner to determine the state of available “Qi?(vital energy) and the Yin Yang energetic qualities of the body. Qi travels along 12 energetic pathways in the body called meridians (or more accurately, channels). 365 acupuncture points are located on these meridians and can be accessed using needles or acupressure. Acupuncture treatments help to moderate the organ systems and flow of Qi throughout the body, thus initiating healing and harmony within the body/mind/spirit.

Alternative Medicine for Cancer Support - Chinese Herbs

Traditional Chinese medicine is exceptionally effective at treating cancer. Chinese medicine brings the body ‘into balance? and a body in balance cannot support cancer. Chinese Cancer Supporting Formulas, such as Ageless Herbs’ Tangerine Peel Formula, address the whole cancer picture, not just one aspect of cancer. Additionally, well-balanced formulas such as Tangerine Peel Formula won’t create further imbalance down the road.

There are two specific diagnostic similarities with the majority of cancer patients:

1.) There is stagnation of Qi & Blood in the body.
2.) There is a relative Yin/Yang imbalance in the body.

Qi

Qi (pronounced “chee? is generally thought of as the vital force within our bodies. Qi is yang in nature and is responsible for animation of the human form. Qi travels through the 12 meridians (channels) very much like blood through vessels. Chinese medicine works to insure that Qi is able to move freely, that it is moving in the correct direction, and that there is an abundant availability of Qi. It is acquired through food, air and herbs.

Blood

It is said that ‘where Qi goes, Blood follows.?The concept of blood circulating throughout the body distributing nutrients in Western medicine is similar to the Chinese conception of Blood. Blood is Yin in nature and requires Qi to circulate correctly. “Blood Deficiency?is not necessarily anemia, but can indicate that insufficient blood is reaching the organs for proper function which would lead to disease in those organ systems. Blood deficiency is one of the main symptoms with premature aging and can affect the quality of the skin and hair. Chemotherapy consumes blood, and patients who have undergone these therapies need intensive herbal therapy using Yin Tonics. Additionally, tumors are considered to be stagnant blood accumulations, and blood-movers are vital in treating cancer.

Yin/Yang

Traditional Chinese Medical Theory dictates that all of the energies in the body must be balanced relative to one another in order for there to be good health and vitality. Therefore, the Yin(substance) must be balanced with the Yang(energy), the organs must harmoniously work in unison, and the emotions must be stable. Yin is substance to the body like a log is substance to a fire. It is necessary to first rebuild the Yin so that the Yang energy can burn long and bright.

The root of many of the ideas within Chinese medicine lies in the concept of Yin and Yang. Yin and Yang are emblems of the fundamental duality in the universe, a duality that is ultimately unified. Yin and Yang are complementary, and not contradictory. Nor is one regarded as “good?and the other “bad? Rather, a harmony is sought between Yin and Yang, and any imbalance avoided. Yin is matter like blood, fluids and tissue in the body. Yang is the action potential and heat in the body. Chinese medicine balances Yin and Yang and can also build these qualities in the body when they are deficient.

Initially, a patient may be Yang or Qi deficient leading to the imbalance at the onset of cancer. However, after radiation or chemotherapy, the Yin deficiency & Blood deficiency have to be addressed. Some of the signs that cancer patients often experience after chemotherapy are classic Yin & Blood deficiency symptoms such as dry skin and afternoon and evening sweats.

Herbs for Cancer Therapy

There are many herbs that are used for cancer therapy, and many herbal strategies in applying the herbs.

Herbs that Support Immune Function

These are typically Tonic Herbs that can be used over a period of time to strengthen the immune system, build blood, and bring balance to the body. Our Chen Pi Cancer Support Formula and our Resilient Warrior Formula contain herbs that boost the immune system.

Herbs That Break Up Acumulations

This is a very important strategy in Chinese medicine for successful cancer treatment. Tumors are generally thought of as accumulations, or blood-phlegm nodules. These herbs break up blood stagnation and accumulations. Our Chen Pi Cancer Support Formula contains specific herbs that break up accumulations.

Herbs that Reduce Tumors:
These are used as support herbs in larger formulas because of their tendancy to create further Yin/Yang imbalances in the body that will create future illnesses. Our Chen Pi Cancer Support Formula contains herbs that specifically reduce masses.

Herbs for the Liver:
Our Free & Easy Wanderer Formula will provide Liver detoxification and Liver support that are critical in the recovery from cancer.

Herbs to Stimulate Lymphatic Drainage: Our Central River Formula will effectively drain Lymph fluids.
