DO IT RIGHT , DO IT RIGHT THE FIRST TIME ,AND YOU WILL NOT BE SORRY ! Hi I just seen a story in a some what Snobbish magazine called Hemmings Sports&Exotics car. A short story on a project car showed a photo of a wire splice not done right . A complaint was made about the Two wires. They were not the same wire size and they were tied together with a Quick crimp on connector .But these guys from Vermont failed to tell the readers what was the real problem and how to do a good job ,on maybe your not so snobbish car . Or maybe your not so expensive motorcycle .They could not even tell the Riches, with their Beamers and Lambos what a good job should look like . First of all Quick crimp on wire ends Radio Shack Type as well as most) are not for Autos ,they are for indoor wire systems and low volts and amps .Out in the Rain ,snow, hot & cold with engine and frame shaking as well as high amps they will fail . Maybe when you are 100 miles from home, its dark and rain and snow is falling on your head . Wire to your Trailers brake lights crimped on ? They flicked and out . Do it right ! Use heat shrink tubing ,Use the same size wires or at best do not go from a large wire of your system to a smaller add on wire to the back of your trailer .Go a little bigger if you can’t match the wire, but don’t get stupid . Strip and clean the ends , copper brown ? scrape with a knife untill it shines or sand paper it . Slide a loose fit Heat shrink tube over one side of the wire . Twist wire ends together but in a way that the tube can pass over the knot ,also the wires should kind of stay together even with out solder .Try to make a good mechanical connection before you solder .A Bell connection is always best when just end splicing wires together . Now use a electric Soldering gun put it under the wire knot untill electric type solder will flow from the top all over the knotted wire ends .Let it cool then slide Shrink tube over finished wire ends .Use the sides of the Soldering iron to shrink the tubing . You can also pull the plastic off of plug type quick connectors ,male and female ends .Toss the plastic part in trash .twist the end of stripped wire, install all the way through Q Connector Then use your crimping tool . Crimp it some use a little solder flux don’t over do it .Flow the solder from the top heat from bottom .Then cover with shrink tube, if its coming apart often use more then one tube (Heat Shrink Tube For Electric Use ) Not hard to find .Now this takes a little longer then sticking on a dam quick just crimped on end , but now you have a good clean almost fail safe electric repair that might not get you killed out on the road because those tail lights don’t work. Get a Solder gun and the more power(Watts) the faster it will heat and flow the solder . Put down “damp”not dripping rags under were you are working so you don’t burn everything up if you drip a little solder .Unhook the battery ground wire as a safe back up when working on components . Dont get in a rush ,Don’t use a Propain torch or open flame of any kind on a Gasoline or Diesel car to solder or shrink tubing or to even check the acid level in the battery. Stupid!A quick story is in order hear .I know of a top Surgeon that tried to check the water acid level or just look at his Golf Cart battery after dark with a Butane cigarette lighter. The Battery exploded .You would think that a Surgeon with years of schooling would have had better sense. His face and hands almost blown off and he lost one eye,and is now retired as a Surgeon as well as a golf cart owner .Please no flames close to battery as well as even a electrical spark .Further more most upholstery backing is very framable ,sound deadening also. If you don’t solder buy a good iron and read the book that is included . A Top Pro mechanic has a small watt gun type one, a large gun over 100watts with a light ,bench pencel type with holder .and a big old plug in and a torch type for plumbing jobs not car related, as well as a hot air gun for shrink tubing . Bad mechanics just have a crimping tool and don’t care its not their car or truck so why do a good job .WHEN DONE UNPLUG ANY and ALL HOT TOOLS ,or just un plug everything .Stay in work aira for 15 min to check that nothing is going to be smoking or on fire .Do not trust push buttons with anything that gets hot (my mom always unplugged the toaster after all the eggs and tost was gone She would have unplugged the range but it was gas). By the way I sent something like this to the Editor of Hemmings Sports & Exotics but I am only a old retired mechanic that might not spell vary well and I did not go to a big New England collage as a creative writing major, that mom had the loose cash for . So more or less their monthly fluff rag is to good for my input .But I know more about Moving Electric Systems then they could ever tell you if they live forever ,Why .they don’t care ,They are that big of snobs .I could add more ,( wire help )but this is a small format .How do you feel ,Tell Hemmings they are Snobs , Tell me if I can help you with any thing else please Vote for this yes or no .
