There are many aspects of Federal Law that applies to Ameriacn flag Etiquette. The specific section that refers to this is called the “Flag Code.” Here are some of the general guidelines that answer the most common questions:

- Flag should be lighted at all times: (daytime-sunlight) (nitetime-light source)

- Flag should flown only in fair weather unless its specifically designed for all-weather.

- Flag should never be dipped (or lowered) to any person or thing.

- When Flag is lowered it should never touch the ground nor any other object. It should be received by waiting hands.

- Flag displayed upside down is a sign of distress.

- American Flag should not be a costume nor atheltic uniform (whole nor in part), unless its in the form of a Patch on the uniform of Military, Police or Fire Personelle and members of a patriotic Group.

- American Flag design should not be used for general decoration. Stripes of Red, White and Blue are available for this purpose with the Blue stripe always on top.

- American Flag should not be used for advertising purposes. It should not be imprinted on any articles that would be discarded afterwards (like napkins, paper plates, boxes, etc.)

- American Flag should not have any any mark, letter, insignia, word, number, drawing nor figure attached nor placed on it.

- American Flag should not be used to deliver, hold, carry nor recieve anything.

- Flag should be stored neatly folded and ceremoniously.

- Flag should be clean and mended of any tears/rips when necessary.

- When American flag is worn, nor no longer fit for service as a symbol of our country it should be destroyed by burning in a private and dignified manner.
