I decided to write this guide in addition to the review on this book that I have already written. I hope you will find it interesting and helpful.
Please take the time to read and vote on both the Review of the book and this pictorial Guide of the War Dog Memorial on Guam!
DQ Fall 1994 Part 2
Always Faithful is an accurate account of the hero war dogs and servicemen of World War II. These dogs served on Guam and in the South Pacific during the war and endured many hardships while showing true devotion to their servicemen owner/handlers.
Dr. Putney wrote this book from first hand knowledge as a tribute to the War Dogs of WWII.
I recommend this book. It is a great read and totally non-fiction.
Many of these dogs were being euthanized and not returning home after the war. Dr. Putney fought for the right for these dogs to return to the States. He won! The remaining dogs won and returned home.
This is not the case with war dogs that fought in Korea and Vietman war. They were left behind.
In 1989 Dr. Putney returned to Guam only to find the original War Dog Cemetry in shambles. After five years of hard work on Dr. Putney’s part the U.S. Navy came to the rescue and relocated the War Dog Cemetery on Orote Point, U.S. Naval Base on Guam in 1994.
The United Doberman Club also helped and commissioned Susan Bahary to create a bronze sculpture to honor these fallen dogs of war.

The sculpture is of Kurt, the first War Dog killed in action.
The Inscription from the Memorial commenorating World War II combat dogs read:
25 Marine War Dogs gave their lives liberating Guam in 1944. They served as sentries, messengers, scouts. They explored caves, detected mines and booby traps.

To honor the working dog heritage of the doberman pinscher, the Untied Doberman Club dedicated this statue to the courageous doberman pinscher that valiantly served during the war in the pacific.

This picture was taken at the Eukanuba Classics at the Long Beach Convention Center, CA in 12/2006. This is a larger statue replication then the one pictured above. photo?by ijansen. Susan Bahary recreated her statue of Kurt especially for this display.
Always Faithful is without a doubt a must read for any animal lover! I recommend that you add it to your reading list.
Thank you for reading my guide and many thanks Irene to sharing her pictures for this guide.
(I will be adding some additional picture, shortly.)
