All-natural Heating Pad/Cooling Pad Rice Sock TABsocks
Garden guide February 18th, 2008
Hi folks,
JiMi-G here (of the The JiMi-G eBay Store) with some info on rice socks (a. k. a. all-natural heating pads/cooling pads.) So what exactly is a rice sock? Well, to put it simply, a rice sock is a clean sock full of long-grain, white rice (not minute rice!) You fill a clean sock up with as much rice (or corn seed) as you want (more full for a pillow-like feel, less full to use more like a wrap), tie it in a knot, nuke it in the microwave for a minute or two, and voila, a home-made heating pad that should stay warm for 20-30 minutes after you heat it. Alternatively, you can throw it in the freezer for a few hours and have a soft, easily shaped to the contour of any joint, cooling pad for that sore knee after a pick-up basketball game or whatever else ails you.
They’re cheaper to make than anything else you can buy, and if you ever have to throw it away, you won’t be harming the environment with gel that could leak out or an attached cord with metals that will take the Earth decades to break down. Remember, you want long-grain white rice, NOT minute rice which will only burn in the microwave and fill your home with a pungent odor!
There are many different web sites offering their own brand/version of rice socks including TABsocks?and some neat, cuddly animal-shaped (and more) rice socks that are actually filled with corn seed for a light, popcorn-like scent. Use your favorite search engine and type in, “rice sock” to find your favorite kind, or use the instructions above for a home-made rice sock of your very own.
Enjoy!
