Crooks Scammers & Conmen Don’t Want You to Read This

We publish a number of eBay guides

Some are simply informative and factual expert guides, such as our first:

Gold Sovereigns - History Information & Specifications

and

Krugerrand - One Ounce Investment Gold Coin

We also publish a number warning about misleading descriptions used by eBay and other dealers.

The Crooks Don’t Like It

In each case, we try to explain exactly why the offers are misleading,

and to present an unbiased guide to why you should be reluctant or

careful when dealing with the vendors. There are laws about libel and

defamation, so we do need to be careful to to publish only material

which is accurate and in the public interest.

Of course, the individuals or dealers involved do not like it, as it

threatens their business and income. They do what any self-respecting

Mafia member or gangster would do, they try to take whatever action

they can to discourage the whistle-blower, and at the same time conceal

the revelations from any potential reader and buyer.

Crooks Register Negative Votes Against Our Guides

Most scammers or crooks use multiple eBay accounts, and they use these

to register negative “unhelpful” votes on our guides. They do not just

restrict themselves to voting against the particular guide which names

(as far as eBay allow) and shames them, they also vote against ALL of

our guides. As we have now written over 200, this means that a single

eBay member with one account could place over 200 “not helpful” votes

against our guides. With two accounts, he could register over 400

negatives.

Some scammers probably have 50 or more dormant accounts awaiting

activation, so could place 10,000 negatives, although this would entail

many man hours, unless they managed to automate the procedure.

What Can You Do?

As a normal eBay member, you can try to make your voice and vote felt

by voting “Yes” for all guides which contained anything of interest or

use. If you think the scammers are despicable, you could try to redress

and repair the balance by voting “Yes” on a number of our guides (all

200 if you wanted), although we do not expect anybody to expend this

amount of time or energy on our behalf.

Contact eBay

You could also try to send a comment or suggestion to eBay to change

the voting system. If occurs to us that there is little if any need for

a “No” vote on guides, and removing it would improve the reliability of

the system in that it would remove the opportunity for crooks to

interfere with the voting.

Why Should You Worry?

We do not expect you to feel sorry for us, or to worry on our behalf,

but the scammers are making it more difficult for you and other normal

respectable members to find guides which warn about scammers, simply

because every “No” vote makes it harder for you to find the relevant

guides. Guides are displayed in a priority order. Ones written by eBay

appear first, followed by others in order of nett positive votes, just

like feedback.

You can fight back by voting for all guides which you consider to be

helpful. If all eBayers followed this philosophy, then the guides

written by the good guys would not get shouted and voted down by the

bad guys.

How Do We Know?

How do we know that our guides are the target of “interference” or

nuisance voting? About 6 months or so after we published our first

guide, we started making an occasional log using Excel listing the

date, number of guides, “Yes” votes, “No” votes, and “Reviewer Rank”. I

think we started the log when we noticed a “Top 200 Reviewer” icon on

the “Member Information” bar of our listings. We wondered how long it

would take us to reach “Top 100 Reviewer”, and “Top 25 Reviewer” status.

We had suspected that there may be a small element of spoiling voting

going on, but it was not until shortly after we had published this

guide:…

Investors in Time Rip Off

…that we noticed a sudden and large spike in the number of negative votes.

Naturally, we have our suspicions about who is rigging the voting. We

have reported this to eBay, who advise us that they can examine their

record of the IP addresses of the voters, but they appear to have taken

no action yet (could it be because the negative voting is not costing

eBay anything in lost fees?).

You can see that our most popular guides each only have about 8 “No”

votes, our guess is that about half of these are genuine, the other

half malicious. Our most recent guides have only about 4 “No” votes,

sometimes when they have only been viewed about 10 times. This far

exceeds the normal voting level patterns for eBay guides.

There are a few exceptions, our

Sniping - Is it Good Strategy for Winning Auctions?

guide seems to attract quite a lot of “No” votes on its own merits. We

guess that in addition to people who sell sniping solutions, there are

many devoted and dedicated snipers out there who vote “No” because it

contradicts their own beliefs.

Are We Afraid?

No, although we realise this negative voting will negatively affect the

prominence of our guides, we have, if anything, added more guides about

misleading titles and descriptions. Obviously, this is likely to goad

even more scammers into registering multiple negative votes against all

our guides.

Perhaps we should consider it to be a badge of pride that our guides attract so much attention, even if much of it is negative?

How to Clean and Polish Pewter

collectibles toys February 29th, 2008

There are a few different ways to clean your pewter. First we will start with Antique Pewter which usually contains lead may develop a dark patina. This is a result of the lead. This patina creates an antique look that many manufacturers try to imitate. That patina layer acts as a protective layer and should not be removed. If removed the layers underneath are exposed and in time will corrode again.

Lead free pewter or modern day pewter does oxidize over time.

Polished Pewter

Polished Pewter is very shiny and smooth. It needs to be cleaned a couple of times a year.

TO CLEAN

  1. Make paste with 1 tsp salt, 1 cup vinegar and 1/2 cup flour.
  2. Apply to pewter
  3. Let sit for 15 minutes to 1 hour
  4. Then rinse and dry with soft cloth.

To take out fine scratches you can use a polish called “Mothers” that can be found at the hardware store. Apply a small amount and rub in a circular motion with a soft cloth. You must be careful as you rub it wil remove a fine layer of pewter.

Satin Pewter

Satin Pewter has a bit rougher appearance. It is not shiny and has a grain type finish.

TO CLEAN

  1. Wash in warm water with mild detergent.
  2. Dry thoroughly with soft cloth.

Every few years you may want to buff out or brush this kind of pewter. Use very fine steel wool that can be found at the hardware store. Rub in the direction of the grain and do not press hard.

Polish

Polish pewter with a paste made of rottenstone (decomposed limestone available at hardware stores) and boiled linseed oil. Rub in one direction. Then wash pewter in warm soapy water. Do not use silver or brass polish. Rinse. Dry and then buff. For a lustrous satin finish, rub in one direction with a paste of whiting and denatured alcohol. Then wash, rinse, dry and buff. Use a commercial pewter cleaning product if desired.

A Few Last Things

  1. Never wash pewter in the diswasher
  2. Pewter can be stained or corroded by acidic foods such as citrus juices.
  3. Do not use an abrasive cleaner.
  4. Some people use cabbage leaves to polish their pewter. Simply peel them off and use as scrubbers.

7 Day Buddhas according to Theravada Buddhism

collectibles toys February 29th, 2008

Theravada Buddhism, an orthodox Buddhist sect which keeps the original doctrine and tradition succeeded from the Buddha, is adopted by Sri Lanka, Myanmar and Thailand while Mahayana sect is popular in China, Japan and other countries.

Buddhism originated in the southern Nepal with the teachings of Siddharta Gautama, the founder of Buddhism. He renounced his royal life to find the way to be out of the cycle of life which He considered suffering.

After years of studies of Hinduism in several schools and self- mortification, He found that those ways would not allow him to see the salvation. He then continued to quest the truth of life by mediating. Upon meditation under the bodhi tree, Siddharta got the thorough knowledge of the world, called the Four Noble Truths, becoming the Buddha or the Enlightened One. The first truth is that life is dukkha or a suffering. The fact that one must exist in the endless cycle of rebirth, weakness, sickness and death is suffering. The cause of being trapped in this suffering world is explained in the second truth-that is tanha or desire. The desire detains ignorant people attached to the illusion of the world: wealth, reputation, or passion is all illusion. The third truth is that the misery can be ended by removing the desire. The fourth truth tells of the approach to achieve the release - that is the Buddha’s Eightfold Path.

Nirvana is the ultimate goal of Buddhism; it is the state that one ceases the rebirth.

Scam dvds-Bootleg dvd. Ripoff by thieves!

collectibles toys February 29th, 2008

Fake DVDs on eBay is a problem that you may not even know about, but it is very serious. Any DVD that is a dvd-9, or is just box art and disk but no case these are usually fake. If you ask the seller a question about if the item is an official studio release, and hear no reply, this is a red flag that the item could be fake. If the seller has private feedback or if you have to email the seller to be able to bid on the item, these are both red flags.

How to protect yourself from bootleg sellers:

1. Do not buy from a seller unless they state in writing that the product is factory original.

2. Never go with a seller who has comments in their feedback with questions of items being fake.

3. Only buy from sellers who accepts Paypal payments, and who are Paypal business verified.

Go with sellers who provide answers to questions promptly, fraudulent sellers do not like to perform basic customer service as they know they do not need to keep their feedback in good standing as they will probably be kicked off eBay in a few weeks anyways.

Glossary of Knife Terms A through D

collectibles toys February 29th, 2008

A Glossary of Knife Terms A-D

By RoadsideImports

A
ABS
A black amorphous thermoplastic terpolymer with high impact strength.

Alloying Element
Any of the metallic elements that are added during the melting of steel or aluminum in order to increase corrosion resistance, hardness, or strength.
Chromium and nickel are two of the more common ones used.

Aluminum
A nonferrous metal, commonly used as handles, that gives the knife a solid feel, without the extra weight.
The most common finishing process for aluminum is anodization.
The most common form of aluminum is heat treatable T6-6061.

Anodization
An electrochemical process that is used to add color to aluminum and titanium.
Depending on the voltage used, colors can vary.
High voltage creates dark colors.
Low voltage creates light colors.

Anodized Aluminum
Subjecting aluminum to electrolytic action in order to coat it with a protective and decorative film.

A/O - Assisted Opening
A spring-assisted knife is a knife that when you push on the thumb stud to open it a spring takes over and propels the blade open. Spring-assisted knives make a great alternative to automatic knives. A Spring / Torsion assisted knife is a type of knife which uses a spring assisted mechanism behind the blade. They open by the ambidextrous thumb stud on the blade with a slight bit of pressure. They are commonly confused with switchblades, but have one main difference. While a switchblade can be opened usually with the push of a button within the handle, the user of a spring-assisted knife must apply slight pressure to the thumb stud and the spring/torsion assisted mechanism does the rest. Once the knife has been opened about one-quarter of the way (45?, the mechanism will open the knife the rest of the way. A/O knives are Assisted - Opening which are also Spring - Assisted knives. See Bill SB 274 for Legal Information

AUS 8 Steel
A high carbon, low chromium stainless steel that is an excellent compromise of toughness, strength, edge retention, and resistance to corrosion.

B
Back (of the blade)
The opposite side of the belly.
The unsharpened side of a single-edged blade.

Background for Knives
The ability to produce and use tools is what has enabled humans to rise from a very primitive existence and adapt to almost every climate or situation existing on this earth. Granted, we have superior intellectual and reasoning ability. Wit alone, however, did not enable our long-ago ancestors to overcome the lack of fangs, claws, horns, antlers, size, speed, and/or strength possessed by other members of the animal kingdom whom they either preyed upon or competed with for food. Intelligence enabled them to fashion stones, bones, and other material into increasingly efficient tools. Knives, in the nascent form of naturally occurring sharp-edged stones, were undoubtedly among the first tools they ever used. We should consider that without these tools, the dietary and wardrobe options available to our ancestors would have been quite limited. Our “lifestyle” of today is built on this foundation. Knives are indeed tools. Occasionally, knives are employed as weapons, both defensively and offensively. Unfortunately, knives are also occasionally used to commit crimes. It is the potential that knives can be used criminally and perhaps a misperception as to the frequency of criminal use that has given rise to laws regulating knives in essentially every state. Our Federal government became involved in firearms regulation in the early part of this century and continues to assume an increasing level of control as to firearms. Given the relatively long period of Federal involvement, the doctrine of Federal preemption, and the fact that firearms laws are for the most part based on purely objective factors, such as barrel length or action type, there is a greater degree of consistency among the laws of the various states as to firearms. Such is not the case with knives. Laws regarding knives are a hodgepodge of legislative action, some of which dates back to the 1800’s. A handgun “legal” in a given state would in all probability be “legal” in the vast majority of states. The law regarding what a person may or may not do with a legal handgun for example would vary considerably from state to state. The situation is slightly more complex in the case of knives. What constitutes a legal knife varies greatly from state to state and may depend upon objective standards, such as blade length, or more subjective standards, such as the shape or style of the blade or handle. As is the case with firearms, the law of the different states regarding what one may do with a legal knife varies.

Balisong/ Butterfly Knife
A knife that has two separate handle sections that rotate around the blade’s pivots in order to create a handle, that then rotate back in order to cover and protect the blade while it’s closed.
Believed to have originated in the UK and brought to the Philippines by English sailors. It was adopted and popularized in the Philippines, and is often used in Filipino martial arts.
The Balisong, called a Butterfly knife in the West, and sometimes known as a Batangas knife, is a form of folding pocket knife with two handles that counter-rotate around the tang such that, when closed, the blade is concealed within grooves in the handles. In the hands of a trained user, the knife blade can be brought forth quickly using one hand. Manipulations (flipping) are performed for art or amusement and require great skill. Translated from Tagalog, the word “Balisong” means “Broken Horn” (literally, “baling sungay”) as the original Balisongs were made from carved animal horns and recycled knife blades. The name butterfly knife is a term coined in the United States much like “drumbox” for the kahon. The history of the butterfly knife is uncertain, though three main ideas persist: * The knife may actually have been invented by the French. The book “Le Perret” shows an obvious sketch of a balisong knife, and is dated 1710 A.D. The book itself suggests the balisong was developed in the late 1600’s or early 1700’s A.D. * The knife dates back to around 800 A.D. and is a traditional weapon of the Filipino fighting art of Eskrima; however, it is not actually a prominent weapon in the art. * The knife was invented around 1900 A.D. in the Philippines and spread by American soldiers returning from World War II. In many U.S. states, it is illegal to possess and/or carry such a knife in public; indeed, doing so is a felony in some states, such as Nevada.

Bead Blasting
A process by which steel, aluminum, and titanium are finished, providing a 100% subdued, non-glare finish.

Belly (of the blade)
The curved/ fattest part of the blade’s edge.
The belly enhances slicing and may be plain or serrated.
The larger the belly is, the blunter the point of the knife becomes.

Bill SB 274
Bill SB 274, clarifies the definition of a one-hand opening knife so they are not wrongly classified as switchblades. Bill SB 274 clearly states: For the purposes of this section, switchblade knife means a knife having the appearance of a pocketknife and includes a spring-blade knife, snap-blade knife, gravity knife or any other similar type knife, which can be released automatically by a flick of a button, pressure on the handle, flip of the wrist or other mechanical device, or is released by the weight of the blade or by any type of mechanism whatsoever. Definition of Switchblade knife does not include a knife that is designed to open with one hand utilizing thumb pressure applied solely to the blade of the knife or a thumb stud attached to the blade, provided that the knife utilizes a detent or other mechanism that (a) provides resistance that must be overcome in opening the blade, or (b) biases the blade back toward its closed position. In order to ensure that only legitimate one-handed opening knives are covered, SB 274 narrows the language to only allow knives to fall under the exemption from the switchblade law if that one-handed opening knife contains a detent or similar mechanism. Such mechanisms ensure there is a measure of resistance that prevents the knife from being easily opened with a flick of the wrist. Moreover, a detent or other mechanism is prudent and a matter of public safety as it will ensure that a blade will not inadvertently come open.

Bevel
The sloping area that falls from the spine towards the edge and false edge of the blade.

Bolster
A piece of metal, generally nickel silver or stainless steel, that is located at one or both ends of a folding knife handle.

Brushed Finish
See “Satin Finish”

C
Carbon Fiber
A lightweight material made of small, hair-sized graphite fibers, that have been woven together and fused in an epoxy resin. This creates a three-dimensional appearance and is an excellent, yet expensive, handle material.

Choil
The unsharpened part where the blade becomes part of the handle.
It is left at full thickness, like the blade’s spine.
Sometimes the choil will be shaped to accept the index finger.

Chromium
A hard, steel-gray metallic alloying element that is resistant to tarnish and corrosion.
It is used in the hardening of steel alloys and the production of stainless steels.

Clip-Point Blade
A blade that has a concave or straight cut-out at the tip (which is known as the “clip”). This brings the blade point lower for extra control and enhances the sharpness of the tip.
They usually have a false edge and a larger belly to allow for easier slicing.

Cocobolo Wood
A hardwood from the Cocobolo tree, with an appealing grain and fine texture, that ranges in color from bright orange to deep red and dark purple.

Combination Edge (Partially Serrated)
A blade that has a partially serrated, partially plain edge.

Cordura
Cordura?is a long lasting, certified fabric from INVISTA that is used in many products.
It is resistant to abrasions, tears and scuffs.

Corrosion
The deterioration of a metal, caused by the metal’s encironment and it’s reaction to that environment

Criminal Consequences For Knives
Criminal prosecutions based exclusively on the simple possession of an “illegal” knife are rare. At least the cases that become reported seem to involve coalescent criminal activity. As a practical matter, the constitutional prohibition against unreasonable searches and seizures protects the otherwise law-abiding citizen who happens to be walking down the street with a pocketknife having a blade one-eighth of an inch over the limit. This may give rise to a false sense of security based upon the “it can’t happen to me …I’m not a criminal” mentality. There is also a perception that a violation is generally considered to be a “weapon” violation, which can lead to all sorts of disqualifications, ranging from acquiring or owning firearms to military service, as well as public and/or private sector employment. As an example, in Pennsylvania, it is a misdemeanor to possess a knife or cutting instrument on school property. There is also a law in Pennsylvania which disqualifies persons convicted of any firearms. Persons convicted of any of the listed crimes who own or possess firearms must sell or transfer any and all firearms in his or her possession within a period of sixty (60) days. The list of crimes runs the gamut from murder, rape, kidnapping, arson, robbery that also includes the misdemeanor of possessing a weapon, meaning any knife, on school property. Pennsylvania is not unique in this regard. Similar legislation exists in many other states. Attend a PTA meeting or a high school football game with a small folding knife in your pocket or handbag, or even a tiny knife on your key chain, and you are subject to the same legal disqualifications meted out to murderers and rapists. If there is even a small knife in your pocket or car when you drive your child to school, or perhaps exercise your right to vote (many jurisdictions’ plots are located in school buildings), various rights which you may have thought to be “inalienable” may be in jeopardy. By the way, if you read the entire text of the Pennsylvania law regarding weapons on school property, it merely advises that a breach of the law is a misdemeanor and makes no mention of the other law listed somewhere else which sets forth these additional and somewhat harsh disqualifications. It should also be observed that in many instances, several different laws of any given state that might apply to the possession of a knife were enacted decades apart. This would have happened quite likely without a full appreciation by the legislators or their constituents (like American Knife and Tool Institute, aka AKTI) as to the implications. Remember that adage about making laws and making sausages are two activities that should not be observed by the consumers or the electorate.

D
Damascus Steel
Created when two types of steel are folded repeatedly during the forging process.
This new durable steel retains the properties of the two parent steels, and is very attractive, yet expensive.

Double-edged Blade
A blade that has been sharpened on both sides, with the point aligned with the spine, going up the middle of the blade.

Double Flat-ground
A blade that is ground flat on both sides of the blade, tapering to an edge that is straight, not rounded.

Drop Point Blade
A blade with a lowered tip due to a convex arc, which provides extra control and leaves the blade’s strength intact.
This blade style also has a larger belly, which is better for slicing.

Helpful Hints From Roadsideimports

The Label - What a particular knife is called by its maker or manufacturer “may be used against you.” For instance, a knife labeled and sold as a “fighting knife” or a “tactical knife” is quite likely to be presented as such by the prosecution to a Court or a jury. A comparison can be drawn to the label of assault rifle that was applied by manufacturers to various semi-automatic rifles which were military-like in appearance, but otherwise functionally indistinguishable from semi-automatic sporting rifles in use since before the II World War. Consider the fact that a knife labeled by its maker as a camping utility survival or hunting knife might be more acceptable in the eyes of the law than essentially the same instrument labeled as a “fighting” knife. If the packaging, care and usage instructions or warranty information that is provided with a new knife touts its sporting purpose, you may wish to retain that material. Gimmicks/Disguised Knives - Blades which are disguised as a cane, ballpoint pen, tire pressure gauge, belt buckle or other such innocuous objects are types of tools which should be evaluated very carefully. These items may suggest an intent on the part of the person possessing the item to deceive others. Concealment - Laws prohibiting the carrying of “concealed” weapons were developed during times when weapons were routinely and openly carried by a majority of the population. In those times, a person with a concealed weapon was a preference that people carrying weapons do so discreetly. Many state statutes that establish licenses for carrying firearms require concealed carry. While you should read and abide by the law of a particular state, if there is any uncertainty, consider the circumstances and the activity that you might be engaged in. For instance, it is generally expected that someone engaged in hunting or fishing will have a knife. The same holds true perhaps to a slightly lesser extent, for other activities, such as camping, hiking, farming, etc. There is probably no real purpose to be served by a hunter concealing his skinning knife. Length - When applying a law that specifies a length, assume the worst possible scenario. Include the choil or the unsharpened portion at the base of the blade when measuring. The prosecution will almost certainly do so. Similarly, be extremely careful about any knives that utilize stored energy, such as a compressed spring, to expose or move the blade, even if it’s only a spring assist. Set a good example - If you must use your knife for some appropriate task in the view of others, do so without flourish and in a non-threatening manner. Avoid giving somebody any reason to complain or be anxious about the fact that you have a knife. Attitude - If you should find yourself detained by a police officer and your knife becomes an issue, it may be good to remember the adage that “Penitence is an avenue to grace.” By all means, avoid appearing to be combative or threatening.
