1893 MORGAN SILVER DOLLARS
The 1893 Philadelphia Silver Dollar is much sought after and very desirable to own. Only 378,792 were made. In contrast, the Carson City Silver Dollar was made in a quantity of 677,000 and more readily available. The New Orleans Mint produced 300,000 and is also sought after. The San Francisco Mint produced only 100,000 Silver Dollars.
This Silver Dollar was designed by George T. Morgan and was first issued in 1878. Due to the similarity of design, the dimes, quarters and halves of that period were credited to Morgan as well. Oddly enough, the Liberty Head Dollar is generally known as the “Bland” Dollar after Richard P. Bland, co-author of the Bland Silver bill of 1878 that provided for the new design.
In April of 1918, 270,232,722 Silver dollars were melted under the Pittman Act. In addition 259,121,554 were exported to India and 11,111,168 were for domestic subsidiary coins. More than likely, this made Silver Dollars less plentiful and made some dates more scarce.
Retain the value of your precious coins by not polishing or cleaning them. Keep them independently stored so that they do not rub against any other surfaces or become contaminated by other metals.
An example of Extra Fine on this coin would consist of strong hairlines and bold ear. Eagle’s feathers all plain but slight wear on breast and wing tips
